Choosing safety should not mean leaving a family member behind. In Georgia, that family member is often a dog, and wellness starts with a spare bedroom and a willing foster.
Ahimsa House is the first and only organization in Georgia dedicated solely to helping people and pets reach safety from domestic violence together. Since 2004 they have assisted more than 2,200 humans and nearly 4,000 animals. On their Time, Talent, or Treasure page they put the math plainly: foster care is about six times more cost-effective than boarding, and so far this year less than a quarter of the nights of safe shelter they provided happened in a foster home. They want that number to move.
What “wellness” looks like when the home is not safe yet
Pets in the program can stay up to 60 days while their person finds housing and gets back on their feet. Ahimsa House covers veterinary care, supplies, and transportation. Fosters are asked to provide love, regular updates that can be passed to the pet’s person, and a quieter room than a kennel. There are no adoption events to attend, because these dogs are going home. If you travel, they handle the backup placement. Staff are reachable around the clock.
You do not have to commit to the full stay. They need people for a pet’s remaining weeks after intake vaccines, for a few free weeks that pull an animal out of boarding, for holiday gaps when boarding partners fill up, and for emergency evacuations when weather hits a partner kennel in South Georgia.
How to help from Atlanta, or farther
Applications start at ahimsahouse.org/foster, with a no-cost background check through Emory Police. If fostering is not possible, they still need transporters, crisis-line coverage, and people willing to tell a vet clinic or dog park that this work exists. Ahimsa House serves the whole state; most of their current supporters sit in metro Atlanta, and they have said out loud that they want more of Georgia to know they are there.
